RE: Splindide Washer/dryer - in my 2001 Dynasty

I had the same problem with the Splendide in my last coach. One day, quite by accident, I was outside while the dryer was running and found that there was virtually no airflow coming out the vent. After removing everything from the cabinet and removing the cabinet floor above the washer/dryer unit, I was able to access the vent hose, remove it and clean about 5 Lbs of lint out of it. Dryer worked pretty well after that. My problem was a kink in the hose which caused it to clog. I rerouted it and never had another problem until we traded the rig.

RE: Tow Vehicle vs tow dolly

I've done both, and although I agree with the 4 down contingent, you already have a car. Easiest and cheapest fix right now is to get a tow dolly, use it until you replace the car, then get one you can tow flat. Make sure you getr electric brakes on the dolly, you should have excellent resale when you are finished with it.

RE: Cell Service

We used AT&T in Alaska and Canada this summer. Had pretty fair coverage, but the roaming charges were really stiff in Canada. I used a Sprint broadband aircard for my internet service and had good coverage in Canada, but once again, very costly. We had absolutely no Sprint coverage in Alaska.

RE: What milage can 400hp cat get on 40' mh

2007 Beaver Contessa, 42', weight 39,000 loaded. Cummins 400Hp ISL. Just got back from a 12,000 mile trip to Alaska towing a Saturn Vue. Average 7.16 MPG calculated by actual gallons used. I have made no adjustment for considerable genset and Hydrohot usage. Used 741 gallons going to Alaska and 841 gallons after the new engine was installed in Fairbanks. Speed was 63-65 mph on interstates and around 58-60 on other roads, conditions permitting.

RE: How to handle non-RV family that want to borrow your MH?

I've been on both sides of this issue. When I was still working, my secretary and her husband were RV'rs and I borrowed their rig once to go to the 24 hour race ar Daytona with my siblings and our kids. I was a nervous wreck the whole time, so thereafter I rented a rig. Now that I own one, I can't believe they let me borrow it. I have let my son use my previous 37' DP once to go to Kansas with his wife and her family for a funeral.(she was way to far along on her pregnancy to fly). He had 2 blowouts, (serious brake line damage from one), and ended up replacing all 6 tires. It cost me about $4000 to let him use it. Now maybe it would have happened to me too, but he was lucky nobody was hurt when the driver's side steer tire blew at 70 in the Interstate. I would never consider letting someone borrow the new rig. MY kids and stepkids can use anything else I own, my son has a key to my sportfishing boat and uses it whenever he wants to fish 60-100 miles offshore. The motorhome is too big, complicated and expensive to loan.

RE: Pad Advice

I second the "go concrete" view. Asphalt will get soft in the heat and your rig will sink in. I suggest that you run a sprinkler over your pad for a couple of weeks to get the underlaying fill really wet and it will settle out pretty well. Then compact it again with a viratory roller and re-level. 8 feet of fill is an awful lot, and if it wasn't compacted every foot or so when placed, the base is likely still very loose. I poured the pad for my pole barn/motor home garage, 5-6 inches deep with an 12" wide thickened edge about 12" deep. I was on about 3' of fill at one end, and have yet to have a cracking problem.

RE: "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?"

We went this year and plan to go back next year. I think this time I will drive up with one of the kids and then have DW fly up to Anchorage and meet me since the trip up is a little boring for her to do two years in a row. Plan on taking at least 2 weeks to get to Dawson Creek from central Florida. We took it easy and stayed a couple of nights in places like Nashville and the Badlands/Mount Rushmore area. Try to take in the Calgary Stampede in early JUly if at all possible. When they say it's the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", they aren't exagerating. We went solo, but met tons of wonderful people in the campgrounds, and usually saw them several times, since the runs are fairly well spaced to the better sites. Plan on being impressed and not wanting to return home.

RE: Alaska Travel Caravan/by yourself

I've never been on a caravan, but I have been on a 21 day coach tour in Europe. Even though we had a wonderful driver and a fantastic tour guide, and the people on the coach were interesting and fun, I would never again subject myself to someone else's timetable. There were many instances where our family would have stayed places longer, or left earlier that the group tour dictated. When we were in Fairbanks this summer, some of the folks from a caravan were trying to do laundry. They had to stop before the clothes were dry because it was time to catch the bus to the "salmon bake". I guess if you are someone who doesn't like to plan for yourself and likes a packaged life, caravans are okay. IMHO, the perfect trip is DW and I and maybe 1 or 2 other couples (in their rigs!). That way you have companionship plus flexibility. Either way you should find Alaska to be the trip of a lifetime.

RE: Question about bay door locks

I just got my coach back from the Wildwood Monaco facility and YES, they are as good as everyone says they are. Excellent service, even without an appointment, and got almost everything covered by various warranties. To OP, everytime you turn on the ignition key, it locks all the bay doors.

RE: Hydronic zone heating questions

With the addition of a good solar panel array, you should be able to keep your house batteries topped up enough to dry camp for quite some time. We love our aquahot.

RE: Keep MH plugged into ac at home when not using?

Also kinda depends on where you live. In Florida, if you don't keep it plugged in and AC running, you will have mold or mildew problems. I put a 50 amp circuit in just so I could keep things nice, and the extra fridge comes in handy.

RE: Monaco Saga

zmotorsports is exactly right. I've worked on fuel tanks in boats, car, trucks and heavy equitment and I've never seen a fuel tank with a return line that had a pick-up tube on it. There is just no way this scenario can be functional. I think the shop is blowing smoke! Before I took their word for it, I'd make them show me how much fuel they can pump out of that return line fitting. If they can do that, then maybe Monaco is on the hook, but I doubt it seriously.

RE: Tow Truck cost for a Motorhome.

I second the Good Sam ERS. We blew the engine 50 miles South of Fairbanks, Ak. and the resulting tow took 7 hours. The Tow truck had to come from Fairbanks, hookup and then tow us 10 miles further south to turn around. All I had to do was sign the ticket to show the work was done. Well worth the premium.

RE: Funny Car Saleman Story

At least your salesman could find a manual. I went to a Hinda dealer near Tampa when I was looking for a new toad, and asked which of his cars could be towed "4 down". It took at least 10 minutes for him to understand what I was asking, and he never could find a manual or answer the question.

RE: How often is length an issue?

As a bonus, I use my Blue Ox to take my toad with me when I have my other vehicles in for repair. Anything with a receiver hitch will work as well as the motor home, and I don't have to worry about whose coming to get me.

RE: How many nights camping this summer?

We spent 50 day on the road, 26 days camping in Alaska, the rest on the road, with round-trip plane rides to and from Florida.(the MH spent an additional 31 days in the Shop in Fairbanks having the engine replaced). I think my favorite place was the Montana/ Sheep Creek area near Talkeetna. Silvers were in and hungry, beautiful views of Denali from the Lodge at Talkeetna. We will return and hopefully get to ue all our time there without having to break the trip for mechanical problems.

RE: How often is length an issue?

No question bigger is better....better ride, more comfort, more CCC, etc, but when you get over 40', you have to be very careful about where you go and how you get there. With our 42' Beaver and toad, we almost always fuel in the truck lanes, even the RV lanes at Flying J can be a challenge to enter or leave. Going into a supermarket parking lot is always interesting, and Chik Filet means a long walk. I have yet to find a commercial campground that couldn't handle the rig, but lots of times we have to disconnect the toad, and once in Calgary, we actually had the hitch thru the back fence to get the front clear of the road. Many National Parks and almost all State Parks are problimatic if not off limits. But since my DW thinks anything less than full hookups with cable is "roughing it", everything works out ok. I guess I'm too spoiled to downsize.

RE: Can a Monaco be towed?

Sure would be news to the guy who towed my Beaver 50+ miles from where the engine scattered to Fairbanks, Alaska. Like the man said, put the stinger under the front axle, remove the driveshaft and hook up the air. Only hard part was getting to the u-joints to disconnect the axle (subframe and tag axle + large driver makes a tight fit) and finding a place to turn it around to head back to Fairbanks. We actually had to drive 10 miles south of the point of disaster to find a large enough turnout.
